Hiphop is voor sommigen van ons altijd al in de ether: hoorbaar, tastbaar en voelbaar. Vaak gonst hiphop op de achtergrond als een stuwende, vormgevende kracht, zoals Fred Moten stelt in het openingsessay van dit nummer. Aan de andere kant: er zijn waarschijnlijk weinig dingen met minder street credibility dan een papieren literair tijdschrift. In plaats van hiphop zogenaamd te valoriseren vanuit de Literatuur, beoogde dit nummer om als nY nieuwe institutionele verbindingen aan te gaan, interactie tussen genres uit te nodigen en uitwisseling tussen overlappende gemeenschappen te realiseren.

Anne Turyn (ed.)

Top Stories was a prose periodical published from 1978 to 1991 by the artist Anne Turyn in Buffalo, New York, and New York City. Over the course of twenty-nine issues, it served as a pivotal platform for experimental fiction and art through single-artist issues and two anthologies. The entire run of Top Stories is collected and reproduced here across two volumes.

Top Stories primarily featured female artists, though in Turyn’s words a few men “crept in as collaborators.” Although primarily “a prose periodical” (as its byline often stated), the issues varied in form and aesthetics, pushing the boundaries of what prose could be and, from time to time, escaping the genre altogether. In fact, the only parameters required for participants were that the periodical’s logo and issue list be included on the front and back covers, respectively.

A great deal of the works are short stories by the likes of Pati Hill, Tama Janowitz, and Kathy Acker, whose Pushcart Prize–winning “New York City in 1979” appeared for the first time in book form as part of the series. Constance DeJong contributes “I.T.I.L.O.E.,” a widely unavailable work that features the artist’s trademark prose and is sure to please fans of her novel, Modern Love. The largest issue of the periodical is undoubtedly Cookie Mueller’s “How to Get Rid of Pimples,” which consists of a series of character studies of friends interspersed with photographs by David Armstrong, Nan Goldin, and Peter Hujar altered with freshly drawn blemishes.

Top Stories also celebrates less conventional literary forms. Issues by Lisa Bloomfield, Linda Neaman, and Anne Turyn take the form of artists’ books, juxtaposing image and text to construct tightly wound, interdependent narratives. Jenny Holzer and Peter Nadin present a collaborative work in copper ink comprised of truisms by Holzer on corporeal and emotional states and drawings by Nadin of abstract bodies. Janet Stein contributes a comic, while Ursule Molinaro provides a thorough index of daily life (and the contempt it produces) consisting of entries that were written just prior to lighting a cigarette.

Top Stories remains vitally defiant, an essential witness to what was the downtown literary and art-world underground.

Anne Turyn (b. 1954) is a photographer based in New York. Turyn’s work has been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Kunsthalle Bern, Denver Art Museum, Walker Art Center, and Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

OEI # 90-91: Sickle of Syntax & Hammer of Tautology offers the first English language overview of the history of concrete and visual poetry production in socialist Yugoslavia between 1968 and 1983.

By focusing on mass-produced examples of concrete poetry, this publication presents these poetic experiments as organically linked to social movements, critical theories, and youth cultural revolutions. In his extensive introduction, Sezgin Boynik, the guest editor of this special issue of OEI, discusses concrete and visual poetry in socialist Yugo-slavia as an uneven and combined development, and emphasizes its confrontational and organizational aspects.

By means of interviews, translations, reproductions, and theoretical and historical statements, OEI # 90-91 offers a picture of a very lively scene of concrete and visual poetry in Yugoslavia, which unfortunately is not as recognized interna-tionally as it would deserve.

Once more, an astonishing issue of OEI – a thrilling, compelling, stimulating feast of ideas regarding publishing and the book: the perfect big companion to read and hug in bed while the virus spreads outside.

Bringing together contributions from circa 130 publishing structures, publishing communities, magazines, small press endeavors, artists, poets, writers, editors, theoreticians, curators, scholars, and art bookstores, OEI # 86–87 reflects upon the challenges, pressures and possibilities of publishing and creating publics in different contexts and places in a time of far-reaching – economical, medial, political, social, technological – transformations.

The potential and the versatility of publishing open it to a diversity of practices and approaches in the arts, but as an eminently social form of art, a collective or micro-collective work with shared responsibilities, it is also a never-ending process of “crafting a variegated approach to how you create, publish, distribute, and build a social ecosystem around your efforts”, of trying to “build up and strengthen the community around these printed forms” (Temporary Services).

It is the conviction of OEI #86–87 that print has the power to play an important part in the construction of social spaces, of a social world. As Benjamin Thorel puts it in one of the essays in the issue, “conceiving of the dynamics of publishing as making publics as well as making things public is not a pun – insofar as the artists/publishers encompass, beyond the book itself, its possible ‘lives’, imagining the different spaces, and the different people, amongst whom a publication will circulate.” This is what Michael Warner has called “a public [as] poetic worldmaking”, implying “that all discourse or performance addressed to a public must characterize the world in which it attempts to circulate, projecting for that world a concrete and livable shape, and attempting to realize that world through address.”

This is also, as stressed by Annette Gilbert and others, what can make publishing such an active force, a force co-constituting texts and publications and publics. Indeed, with Michalis Pichler, it is tempting to say that in publishing as practice – perhaps more than in any other art field – “artists have been able to assert the aesthetic value of their own socio-politically informed concerns and to engage, often under precarious conditions, in cultural activities fully aligned with their political values.”

Été 2021, Vir Andrès est à Marseille, en résidence aux ateliers Triangle-Astérides. Nous somme aperçu-e-s furtivement à un banquet intilué "Le temps que l'huile se colore" que nous avons préparé avec les différent-e-s membres de l'ateliers Vé. Il y avait des bols de glace qui fondaient, des soupes et des préparations fruitées, à la coriandre, aux abricots, au fenouil, des brioches et des chapeaux en pain. Vir était accompagné d'ami-e-s. Il a demandé "Où est Gufo?" alors je lui ai proposé de nous rencontrer bientôt, dans son atelier. Nous avond regardé quelques vidéos: pendant l'une d'entre elles, j'ai fermé les yeux. Les voix étaient plurielles, avec des inclinaisons, des nuances, des accents. Nous avond alors discuté de la nécessité des oralités ondoyantes et multiples. L'invitation pour des conversations au sein de la revue était alors lancée.

Cet été j’ai rappelé un ami, Grégoire Devidal, pour lui demander de ses nouvelles depuis que nous sommes chacun·e parti·e d’Amsterdam où nous y avons partagé quelques années. Il m’a parlé d’un projet de podcasts avec Agathe Boulanger et Gwendal Raymond.

Ayant partagé des moments de vie, de création, de tension, de doutes et beaucoup de moments de travail, il m’est apparu comme une nécessité de proposer ce nouveau numéro de HOOT à ces trois artistes. La parole et l’écriture sont au centre de leur pratique et de leurs recherches. Je leur ai alors confié mon questionnaire habituel pour m’effacer de la trame de ces conversations et laisser place à une nouvelle forme de dialogue : celui qu'iels se partagent sans que je ne les écoute, sans que je n'intervienne. Iels parlent entre-elleux, se questionnent et se meuvent comme autant d’échos infinis sur des parois fluides. Leurs échanges m’ont évoqué ceux des personnages des Vagues de Virginia Woolf dans la manière dont ils s'interpénètrent, dont l’identité des orateur·rice·s valse et les échanges se relaient plutôt que se répondent.

HOOT nr. 4 — The Soft Protest Digest

The Soft Protest Digest centre ses recherches sur l'histoire de l'alimentation, de l'agriculture et des liens sociaux et politiques qui constituent une culture alimentaire. Le collectif croit en l'utilisation de la narration comme moyen de créer ou d'adapter des traditions alimentaires, des recettes et des façons de se nourrir qui tiennent compte de l'héritage culturel et des liens émotionnels entre celleux qui mangent et la gastronomie locale, dans une quête de résilience alimentaire.

Gufo a souhaité rencontrer les membres de ce collectif afin d’explorer les nécessités alimentaires dans lesquelles s’inscrit The Soft Protest Digest. Et puis, très vite, une intrigue s’est créée autour du nom de ce collectif : qu’est-ce qu’une douce manifestation ? Quels sont les liens avec l’alimentation ? Pouvons-nous doucement contester ? C’est-à-dire sans frustration ni violence ? Ce nom a fait écho à une édition dont j’ai imprimé le titre il y a quelque temps, il s’agit de “Radical softness as a boundless form of resistance”* ( dont la traduction pourrait être Une douceur radicale comme forme infinie de résistance). Pouvons-nous associer douceur, résistance, radicalité et alimentation ? Gufo vous invite alors, à lire nos conversations qui divaguent mais surtout à imaginer des banquets partagés dont la joie et les ventres pleins seront les témoins d’onctueuses révoltes.

The second issue of the editorial discursive space for the Bergen Assembly triennial, conceived by Saâdane Afif, is dedicated to the manifold figure of the Moped Rider, which is approached differently by the seven contributors.

Side Magazine is conceived as a site of research for the fourth edition of Bergen Assembly convened by Saâdane Afif. Yasmine d'O., who has been invited as curator of the upcoming edition, will be the executive editor. 
Side Magazine is dedicated to the seven characters in The Heptahedron, a play written by the French poet, essayist, and scholar Thomas Clerc in 2016. In order of apparition these characters are the Professor, the Moped Rider, the Bonimenteur, the Fortune Teller, an Acrobats, the Coalman, and the Tourist. 

The second issue of Side Magazine is dedicated to the manifold figure of the Moped Rider, which is approached differently by the seven contributors. These include the film critic Lars Ole Kristiansen, who follows Nanni Moretti's vespa through Rome in the movie Caro Diario (1993), playing the role of a tourist in his own life. A reprinted chapter from Michele Bernstein's autofiction novel All the King's Horses (1960), tells the tale of late-night meanderings through Paris, and Kristian Vistrup Madsen addresses the changing intimacy between the musing figures in Caspar David Friedrich's series of paintings Two Men Contemplating the Moon (1819–c. 1830). Side Magazine's executive editor Yasmine d'O. is in conversation with curators Marcella Lista and Lou Ferrand about the place and movement of visitors in exhibition spaces.

Andrea’s image-heavy talk on word spacing and vocalisation runs all the way through, on the right-hand pages: the opposite pages contain responses from Will. The issue almost stifles the triangulated space of image, context and commentary; and speaks of the moment between words, things, people, images, perception, past, present and future, between Andrea’s pages and Will’s, as where meaning might breathe.
