Trophy Logic

The festival is a space of communion and celebration, a romanticized collision of bodies, music and magic. The revolution will look like a festival, we’ve been told by philosophers, writers, artists, and marketers. But the festival is also, of course, the space of formalizing ideology, ritualizing the consumption and violence that propels existing structures of power. 

This poetry collection views the migrant, female body as both the glorified and martyred totem of the festival-of-all-festivals we call globalization. Drawing from sources such as Sigmund Freud, James George Frazer, H.D., the Situationist International, seventeenth century narratives of Dutch sailors shipwrecked on the Korean peninsula, the rise of K-pop and the “Korean Wave,” and a zoo-breaking gorilla named Bokito, Festival features kaleidoscopic poetic sequences aiming to show that if anything universal is to be found in lyric poetry’s “I,” it is the result of centuries-long entanglements and contaminations, and of the bodies made to bear these exchanges, to give birth to this century’s globalized subject.

A debut collection from the poet, artist and designer, a suite of unfaithful translations/transversions of works drawn from Baudelaire’s Les Fleurs du mal / Flowers of Evil, a bunch of flowers in decay, pressed and frayed, ‘a flock of pockmarked words.’

Through these creative ‘translations’ of Charles Baudelaire, Alix Chauvet—artist, designer, poet—refuses fidelity in favour of flirtation: her ‘flowers of evil’ line Amsterdam’s canals, drink from the same rainclouds as Rachel Ruysch’s bewitching bouquets, sprout through peat, and are tended by a distinctly feminist and nomadic sensibility. Chauvet—akin to Olive Moore, Sean Bonney and Lisa Robertson—takes the nineteenth-century French decadent as a contemporary accomplice for aesthetic and linguistic misbehaviour. Walter Benjamin once wrote of Baudelaire that he is ‘der geheime Architekt der Moderne,’ and in Chauvet’s hands, those foundations are made porous, unbuilt into cast shadows, into ribbons, into veins streaming across the page. Accompanied by scans of the French poems and Chauvet’s shadow photography, what Cyclamen ultimately offers us is a regenerative rewilding of the English language: a wondrous terrain ringed by vines of unruly syntax and dotted with the fruit of words refusing domestication by any single tongue. — Mia You

Alix Chauvet is a Swiss-French poet and graphic designer based in Amsterdam, taking pleasure in the possibilities of translation. She received her BA in Graphic Design from the Gerrit Rietveld Academie (Amsterdam, 2020), and has since been working independently and in collaboration with contemporary artists. Investigating the relationships between language and body, intimacy and collectivity, past and contemporary, her hybrid practice covers a wide range of visual and linguistic experiments from artist’s book design to experimental translation. Her method is rooted in decelerating the creative process through the use of analogue and unprofitable techniques such as cut-outs, letterpress, linocut, handwriting and painting. Chauvet’s poetic approach follows the same logic, prioritising English over her mother tongue as a way to revise language with both critical detachment and a degree of identification. Her poems have appeared in literary magazines such as Blackbox Manifold, and Cyclamen is her debut collection.

The artist's intimate knowledge based on observation, questioning anthropocentrism through beauty & language. Dear Friend is a monthly letter format publication covering design events, issues, and ideas. This publication distributed via snail mail is initiated by Sandra Nuut and Ott Kagovere.

The publication edited by Sandra Nuut & Ott Kagovere features all the letters from the Dear Friend publishing project, which they initiated at the Graphic Design Department of the Estonian Academy of Arts in 2018. The book includes contributions by Singapore-based design writer Justin Zhuang, designer and writer Else Lagerspetz, and artist Lieven Lahaye. The book is designed by Ott Kagovere and published by Lugemik and Estonian Academy of Arts.

Through the Billboard Promised Land Without Ever Stopping is Derek Jarman’s only piece of narrative fiction. Written in 1971, it is a surreal, fabular, lyrical work – a literary fairytale acid-trip road movie hybrid – the energies and details of which influenced much of his later work across media. The story serves as a foundational text, laying out many of the themes, images and styling of Jarman’s work in painting, film and design whilst also being haunted by the then emerging ecological crisis in its juxtaposition of the beauty of nature with the reckless consumption of modernity.

This edition features facsimile images of the story’s handwritten drafts from Jarman’s archive, a link to an exclusive audio recording of Jarman himself reading the story in full, and is comprehensively informed by a vivid foreword from Philip Hoare, a deeply researched afterword by Jarman scholar Declan Wiffen, and a warm memoir by the artist Michael Ginsborg, a close friend of Jarman’s throughout the period of the story’s writing.

Unsorcery composes and explores ways of sorcery that can eventually surpass or undo some of the contemporary realities and subjectivities. It is an Artworld involved in a productive alienation from concepts through experience and from experience through thought. Unsorcery is an environment in which Alina Popa and Florin Flueras were working together, each following their own path, doing their own practices, texts and performances around the concepts: Life Programming, Artworlds, Black Hyperbox, Second Body, Dead Thinking, End Dream.

Alina Popa (1982-2019) was a Romanian artist who moved between choreography, theory, and contemporary art.

Florin Flueras (born 1978 in Târgu Mureș, Romania) oscillates between contemporary performance, visual arts and theory as contexts in which he activates.

Un essai consacré au travail de la chorégraphe et danseuse Jennifer Lacey et de la plasticienne et scénographe Nadia Lauro, qui rend compte de l'univers visuel des deux artistes au travers de nombreuses illustrations.

Dans cet essai, Alexandra Baudelot s'attache à saisir l'ensemble des œuvres co-écrites par la chorégraphe Jennifer Lacey et la plasticienne et scénographe Nadia Lauro, en observant de quelle manière elles s'architecturent les unes aux autres pour constituer des extensions inédites d'une forme artistique vers une autre.

Elle les observe à la manière de parcours envisagés comme des supports d'expériences cherchant à déborder constamment ses propres cadres de représentation. Ceci afin de saisir les politiques mises en jeu pour penser le corps, sa place dans un environnement fictif ou quotidien, son impact dans les enjeux chorégraphiques contemporains et ses liens avec notre époque.

L'espace de cet essai se prête également à l'univers visuel des deux artistes qui se livrent ici à un jeu de construction entre l'exploration d'images d'archive, de déclinaisons de projets inédits et périphériques aux pièces publiques, d'illustrations, et d'exposition d'un portfolio de dessins.

Originaire de New York, la chorégraphe et danseuse Jennifer Lacey est établie à Paris. Depuis 1991, elle a développé son propre travail chorégraphique qui a été présenté aux États-Unis (P.S. 122, The Kitchen) et en Europe (Klapstuk Festival, Vienna Festival, Danças na Cidade, Biennale d'art contemporain de Lyon, Big Torino). Depuis qu'elle réside en France, elle a créé et présenté plusieurs œuvres : $Shot (Lacey / Lauro / Parkins / Cornell), Châteaux of France no. 2 et no. 3, un projet conçu en collaboration avec Nadia Lauro, et Prodwhee!, une série de courts modules. En 2002, elle a été accueillie en résidence aux Laboratoires d'Aubervilliers. Jennifer Lacey a collaboré à différents projets avec de nombreux artistes : Loïc Touzé, Boris Charmatz, Emmanuelle Huynh, Benoît Lachambre, Catherine Contour et Latifa Laâbissi. Elle développe actuellement ses créations au sein de l'association Megagloss.

Nadia Lauro est artiste visuelle et scénographe basée à Paris. Elle développe son travail dans divers contextes et conçoit des environnements, des installations visuelles et des costumes pour différents projets chorégraphiques. Outre Jennifer Lacey, elle collabore notamment avec les chorégraphes Ami Garmon, Vera Montero, Benoît Lachambre, Frans Poelstra, Barbara Kraus, figures de la danse contemporaine en Europe. En 1998, elle fonde avec l'architecte paysagiste Laurence Crémel l'association Squash Cake Bureau – scénographie et paysage au sein de laquelle elle conçoit des installations paysagères et du mobilier urbain. Elle a également créé la scénographie de plusieurs défilés de mode.
