Obsédée par les objets verts, les films étranges de la pop culture et les marionnettes, habitée par ses souvenirs familiaux, Jen Calleja explore dans Goblinhood son rapport au corps et au dégoût de soi, au désir, au sexe, à la nourriture et au deuil. Elle élabore avec malice une pensée hybride entre essai, auto-fiction, poésie et théorie de la gobelinité .

En chacunx de nous, suggère-t-elle, sommeille un gobelin qu’il est temps de libérer.

About Goblinhood: Goblin as a Mode

The goblin figure is mischievous, marginal, repulsive, and fascinating. The idea of goblin fashion refers to a state of mind, a way of life in its own right.

Obsessed with green objects, strange pop culture films, and puppets, and haunted by her family memories, Jen Calleja explores in Goblinhood her relationship with her body and self-loathing, desire, sex, food, and grief. She mischievously develops a hybrid thought process that combines essay, autofiction, poetry, and goblin theory.

About Jen Calleja

Jen Calleja is the author of Vehicle: a verse novel (Prototype, 2023), named book of the year by Granta and The Big Issue, the long poem Dust Sucker (Makina Books, 2023), the essay Goblins (Rough Trade Books, 2020), and the hybrid autobiography Fair: The Life-Art of Translation (Prototype, 2025). 

She is co-founder of Praspar Press, which publishes Maltese literature in English. Originally from Shoreham-by-Sea, she now lives in Hastings.
