In 1971, Michael Morris and Vincent Tarsov—founders of the Vancouver-based artist network Image Bank—invited Eric Metcalfe, Gary Lee Nova, Glenn Lewis and Paul Oberst to create their own, unique alphabet. NowForty years later, with the permission of the participating artists and the help of Image Bank, these historic silk-screened alphabets have finally been published together. The Alphabet Book is designed by Marc Hollenstein, who was inspired to reinitiate the alphabet publication project after having a conversation with Glenn Lewis during the opening of Lewis’ retrospective exhibition at Kunstverein back in 2014.

Grace Crowley is a publication based on letters sent to the Australian artist and pioneer of modernist painting Grace Crowley (1890–1979) by friends, family and colleagues. Parts of those letters, which are now housed in the Art Gallery of New South Wales and the State Library of New South Wales archives in Sydney, were transcribed and categorised by Riet Wijnen in subsections such as ‘Marital Status’, ‘Teaching’, ‘Hosting’, ‘Eurasia’, ‘X’, ‘Being A Woman’, ‘War’, ‘$’ and ‘Making Work’. The result is an alternative biography constructed solely through a living set of relations.

Canonically Speaking is the second title to appear on the First Drafts imprint, a zigzag in Kunstverein Publishing’s output that’s dedicated to publishing completed manuscripts that would otherwise, for an array of reasons, not see the light of day in this rough early form.

Central to Canonically Speaking is the idea that (female) life is an inherently surrealist experience. In this spirit, the ‘absurd’ is embraced as a means to speak out on themes such as self-image, spirituality, mental health and work. While slipping between poetry, comprehensive list-making, knock knock jokes and intertextual references, forms of recital and misinterpretation often take place, whereby characters quote and repeat sentences and words from a large variety of sources, jumping from the health benefits of whale blubber to court transcripts of Bill Clinton's impeachment to the plasma that is released when microwaving two grapes side by side.

Lip Magazine was self-published by women in Melbourne from 1976 to 1984 and stood as a lightning rod for Australian feminist artistic practice throughout the Women’s Liberation era. The art and ideas expressed over Lip’s lifetime track groundbreaking moves in performance, ecology, social-engagement and labour politics—all at an intersection with local realities. Collecting and presenting the materials of Lip for the first time since their original appearance, The Lip Anthology, edited by Vivian Ziherl, privileges the range and dynamism of contesting feminisms that comprised the Lip project.

Tense is a never-realised publication, written and composed by Lucy Lippard and Jerry Kearns in 1984, that only now has been released in a very limited run on our imprint. The book accompanied the exhibition Top Stories, which took a closer look at the 29 issues of the prose periodical with the same title, founded in the late 1970s by Anne Turyn.

Top Stories was dedicated to fiction by emerging women artists and writers from that time. Tense was originally intended to become part of the series as well, but never made it to print. It was only recently – during the making of the exhibition at Amsterdam’s Kunstverein – that the original mock-up was retrieved from the editor’s archives and finally sent off to the printer.

In the face of utter devastation, Palestinian poets offer their words as mournful testimonies of grief and war, but also of unwavering hope and resistance despite all. In collaboration with Espace Magh, we are proud to present “GAZA, Is there life before death?”: an trilingual anthology of poems written by Fatena Al Ghorra, Hend Jouda, Nour Baaloucha and Wadah Abu Jamie, as well as Charles Ducal.

Edited by Mohamed Ikoubaân and Taha Adnan, the book consists of three parts: the Arabic poems, their French rendering, and newly translated Dutch versions. Across these languages, poetry figures as a bulwark against the degradation of humanity. The book forms a tribute to those who continue to carry out the voice of their people in spite of their occupation and annihilation.

Poëzie is een daad van verzet op een plek waar de hoop lijkt te zijn weggevaagd. Het is een blijvend bastion tegen menselijke degradatie. De Palestijnse dichters Hend Jouda, Fatena Al Ghorra, Nour Baaloucha en Wadah Abu Jami getuigen in hun poëzie over de oorlog op Gaza en de veerkracht van hun volk. Samen met Charles Ducal maken ze deel uit van GAZA, Is er een leven vóór de dood? Deze drietalige bloemlezing, samengesteld door Taha Adnan en Mohamed Ikoubaân, brengt hun gedichten in het Arabisch samen met vertaalde versies in het Nederlands en in het Frans.

En collaboration avec Espace Magh, Moussem présente une anthologie trilingue de poèmes écrits par les poèt·ess·es palestinien·ne·s Hend Jouda, Fatena Al Ghorra, Nour Baaloucha et Wadah Abu Jami, accompagné·e·s de Charles Ducal. Dans GAZA, Y a-t-il une vie avant la mort ?, iels témoignent de la guerre à Gaza et de la résilience du peuple palestinien : des poèmes devenus acte de résistance là où tout espoir semble avoir été écrasé.

De dichtbundel is gepubliceerd ter gelegenheid van het gelijknamige programma dat op 24 juni 2025 plaatsvond in Espace Magh: een avond waar poëzie werd voorgedragen als hulde, als echo van waardigheid en solidariteit. Zoals Taha Adnan aangeeft in het voorwoord: wij hebben niet de rol van spreekbuis willen spelen. Hier is het woord aan Gaza.

De gedichten in het Arabisch (Palestina) en het Frans van Fatena Al Ghorra, Nour Baaloucha en Hend Jouda zijn afkomstig uit het gelijknamige boek, Anthologie de la poésie Gazaoui d'Aujourd'hui, vertaald door Abdellatif Laâbi en samengesteld door Yassin Adnan (Éditions Points, 2025). De Nederlandse vertalingen uit het Arabisch zijn tot stand gekomen in samenwerking met de Onderzoeksgroep Arabistiek en Islamkunde van de KU Leuven.

Doorheen deze drie talen brengt het boek een eerbetoon aan zij die de stem van hun volk blijven uitdragen, ondanks hun bezetting en annihilatie.

The playful, inventive, and lyrically quick poems comprising The Grimace of Eden, Now orbit the strange space halfway between Tennyson and the Metaverse, veering between the natural world and a sci-fi universe, between inner feelings and outward observations, with questions of divinity alongside domestic life, spiders, dishes, and spaceships. The roving eye of these poems wanders through spacetime carrying irreverent theologies and exploring what it could mean to be living, sensate, and awake in this weird moment in time, exposing a mixture half of awe and half of madness.

Occasionally a visiting poetry professor at the Iowa Writers Workshop, they live in the Arkansas Ozarks alongside three loyal, sentient pets, and the continuous void.

For this collection of poems and prose, Leslie Scalapino has gathered four sequences into what she calls an “aeolotropic series.” The poems reflect each other like crystals and change like highly polished glass illuminated by a shifting light. They follow the mind from thought and observation to afterthought, reflection, and obsession.

Leslie Scalapino (1947-2010) is the author of thirty books of poetry, prose, inter-genre fiction, plays, and essays, including numerous collaborations with artists, writers, and dancers. Her long poem way (North Point Press, 1988) won the Poetry Center Award, the Lawrence Lipton Prize, and the American Book Award from the Before Columbus Foundation. Scalapino taught at the Naropa Institute, Bard College, Mills College, and UC San Diego. She was the editor and founder of O Books.
